      Bone healing is an important survival mechanism, allowing vertebrates to recover from injury and disease. Here we describe newly recognized paleopathologies in the hindlimbs of the early tetrapods Crassigyrinus scoticus and Eoherpeton watsoni from the early Carboniferous of Cowdenbeath, Scotland. These pathologies are among the oldest known instances of bone healing in tetrapod limb . extant tetrapods Even if both salamander and crocodile models can be considered as morphotypes for the early tetrapod model (e.g. Warren, ), the comparison with a salamander-like model has been predominant in the literature because the locomotor, anatomical and histological skel-etal features of nonamniotic fossil tetrapods more closely.

WHY study the microstructure of fossil and recent bone?. ALTHOUGH the fossil record of the synapsid forebears of mammals and early archosauromorphs reveals the morphological adaptations of some of the world’s first terrestrial athletes, surprisingly little is known about the diversity of growth patterns and physiology of early tetrapods outside of the dinosaurian clade.
